Polymer-based multi-layer packaging materials are typically used to combine the respective properties of different polymers. This approach has so far created the functionality of packaging concepts to adequately protect sensitive food products and thus generate a longer shelf life.
However, due to their poor recyclability, most multi-layer packaging is usually incinerated or landfilled, which counteracts efforts towards a circular economy.
Mono-material technology is expected to greatly simplify recyclability while offering sufficient protection for much of the food. Many packaging manufacturers around the world are currently trying to overcome the hurdle and offer packaging that both protects multi-layer packaging materials and increases recyclability.
